Brief Description of BT138


The BT138 is a medium-power triac (triode for alternating current) designed for AC switching and phase control applications, such as light dimmers, fan speed controllers, motor drives, and household appliance controls. Manufactured by several semiconductor companies, including Nexperia and STMicroelectronics, the BT138 is valued for its reliable operation, compact size, and ability to handle moderate AC loads in both industrial and consumer electronics.

The BT138 is rated for a repetitive peak off-state voltage (VDRM) of 600V and can handle up to 12A RMS continuous current, making it suitable for switching AC loads directly from the mains supply. It supports four-quadrant operation, meaning it can be triggered by both positive and negative gate currents, providing flexibility in triggering circuits. Its relatively low gate trigger current allows it to be controlled with low-power signals, often through optoisolators like the MOC3021 for safe interfacing with microcontrollers or low-voltage logic circuits.
